An American Tribute
We Will Remember

The Anniversary of the tragedy of the attack on our country two years ago has approached. There have been many who have commented on how that terrible day has affected us, our country, and the world.

We here at DZoo don't know how to improve on what has been said by many across our country. There are never the "right" words, or actions. Anything that we could think of is never enough, and at the same time too much, too trite, or too inappropriate.

Many of us will be trying in some small, and some large ways to remember those who were injured, lost thier lives, their loved ones, their businesses and their way of life. We will try to honor the heroes who lost their own lives trying to save others. One of those ways will be to display our beautiful and beloved United States Flag in our homes, schools, churches, and businesses

Some may not know that there are traditions and even laws concerning the ways to use, display and show honor to our Flag. We too often forget why we "pledge allegience to", or why our National Anthem - the "Star Spangled Banner" is about the "Flag", and not to any person or even to the "Country". Our Flag stand for "us" - the people - of the United States, a country founded on an "idea" - the idea that the rights we hold dear are not "granted" or "given" to us by any person or governmental body, but are, as Thomas Jefferson wrote, in the Declaration of Independence, "endowed by Our Creator" and are "inalienable".

Here are some of the traditions and laws about how our Flag should be displayed and respected. Never, Never be shy or ashamed of showing your respect for our flag and what it represents. Patriotism is never wrong or out of place.

.."whether the Country shall have War or Peace, it shall have Patriotism"

Flag Etiquette

  1. It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flag staffs in the open. However, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

  2. The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

  3. The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed.

  4. The flag should not be displayed on a float in a parade except from a staff.

  5. The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle... When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.

  6. No other flag or pennant should be placed above, or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America

  7. The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
(the term "half-staff" means the position of the flag when the union is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff)

  8. When the Flag is used to cover a casket, it should be so placed that the union is at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should not be lowered into the grave or allowed to touch the ground.

  9. The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

  10. The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

  11. The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.

12.The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

  13. No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform.    ...The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

  14. The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

We know that many of you here at The Site Fights are not from the United States. We know that you also love your own countries, and you should, but hope that you will join with us in remembering those who died on 9/11. We hope that our "lesson" about our flag and why we love and respect it so will help you understand how we feel about our country, and why we so fiercely defend that piece of cloth.

Tribute To The American Flag

This piece of cloth is a composite of each of you, your ideals, your hopes, and your dreams.
It is a symbol of a government that is built on a dream of equality,
freedom and hope, but its fulfillment is dependent on each of you.
Our flag of Red, White and Blue-
Red, not of blood shed but a Love spread from one another,
White as a crystalization of all the wonderful teachings of a good life, and
Blue of condfidence.
Confidence in your flag, your country , and its confidence in you.
Is anybody there? Does anybody care?
I care and I pledge my allegiance to the Flag of the United States
and to that great republic for which she stands.
Wherever it waves, it reassures men of the existance and the
power of freedom and democracy, it reassures them of their own abilities
to govern themselves. Over the field of battle, it serves to remind soldiers
of that for which they fight, and too often die.
I was born and American, I shall live as an American and I shall die as an American,
ever ready to dedicate myself to its call and its stars and stripes-
The American Flag
